Foster a Pet

One of the best ways to help out the Tuscarawas County Humane Society is to enroll in our foster program. As a foster volunteer, you open your home to our rescued animals and take care of them until they can find their forever home. Before our rescued animals are enrolled in the foster program, they are fully vetted to ensure a clean bill of health. We also screen and observe their habits so that we know the animals are house trained, and suitable to be in a home with or without other animals. Our staff and volunteers work together to ensure that every animal is ready for the loving home it deserves.

Volunteer foster caregivers perform a vital service for our animals. Often pets are not ready for adoption, whether it is for medical reasons, pregnancy, nursing, socialization, or difficulty adjusting to the shelter environment. Sometimes the foster home is the first stable and loving environment the pets have ever experienced. Foster parents have the unique opportunity to personally help our rescued animals. You may well be the most important factor in their lives.

By opening your home and heart to these animals in need, they are able to heal much faster than would be possible at our shelter. What's more, fostering frees up room in our shelter to save more pets. We are a no-kill shelter, but if we don’t have the space to take in pets, they may be euthanized elsewhere, even if they are perfectly healthy. Thus, you are helping the lives of many more pets than just the pet(s) you are fostering

Please look over our Frequently Asked Questions. If you like what you see and want to take the next step to becoming a foster caregiver, you will first need to print and complete the appropriate application and release form and return it to the shelter. You can also call (330) 343-6060 or email us with any questions you might have. Before approving your application, we will contact you to arrange an interview.

We are grateful for your willingness and dedication to share your home and love with a pet who may never have known a true home.
