Guardian Angel Program for Your Cat

Many of us worry about what might happen to our feline friends should we become unable to care for them. We may not have anyone who is willing and able to provide a good alternative home for our beloved family members.

Now, the Tuscarawas County Humane Society's Guardian Angel Program can help by finding new caretakers for the cats of enrollees who are either incapacitated or deceased. As a limited admissions shelter, TCHS cannot, and does not, accept all pets surrendered by owners. Participation in this program, however, guarantees room in our shelter or with a TCHS approved foster home for up to 3 of your cats in the event of your death or permanent move to a nursing home or assisted living facility.

Pet owners who wish to participate in the Guardian Angel Program are asked to make a non-refundable payment of $200 per cat. Payment may be made in the form of cash, check, or credit card. Participants must also sign a short contract as well. Under no circumstance will the TCHS accept a cat before the payment is made in full and all paperwork is completed.

In the event of your passing, your previously appointed representative, typically a friend, relative, or neighbor, will contact TCHS to provide notification of your cat's entry into the Guardian Angel Program and to arrange transport. If you are permanently moving to a nursing home or assisted living facility, you or your representative will notify TCHS and arrange for transport of the cat.

When your cat arrives at TCHS, it will be placed in our isolation area. It will be examined by a veterinarian, FeLV/FIV tested, and vaccinated as soon as possible. All cats MUST BE spayed or neutered before coming to the shelter. Once the cat is given a clean bill of health, it will join our other cats that are free to roam throughout the facility. They can enjoy our many shelves, perches, toys, scratching posts, enclosed outdoor areas, and of course the love and attention of our dedicated staff and volunteers.

The Tuscarawas County Humane Society places hundreds of animals each year in loving homes. You can rest assured that your cat will only be adopted to homes that meet our strict guidelines and high standards. You may also include any special instructions that you would like us to pass on to any potential adopters, or any additional criteria you would like us to look for during the screening process. Our goals are to make the transition as easy and stress free as possible for your cat, and to find it a loving home that is as close as possible to the caring environment that you provided for it.
